Timeless not Ageless: Embracing Aging in a Youth-Obsessed World

Spending five minutes on social media makes it seem like everyone is ageless. The glass skin, zero-pores faces and the ageless smiles—at some point, I started questioning whether I needed to be doing more or buying more.
We’re sold on the idea of fighting age instead of embracing it. From innumerable skincare routines to one too many tweatments and filters, youth is fetishized. But the reality of life, aging, is natural and normal. And in all honesty, graceful.
Scrolling through TikTok and Instagram almost daily, I am welcomed with an endless feed of glowing, ageless beautiful faces. On one hand, I adore a good skincare tip but the pressure to look perpetually youthful is overwhelming. The beauty industry thrives on this, bombarding us with an endless array of “anti-aging” products.
However, it’s not only older audiences that feel the pressure. Very often teen videos of “My School Skincare Routine” pop up on my feed, which is, to say the least, frightening. Social media has invented a reality where the existence of wrinkles is benchmarked as failure.
Why don't we celebrate ageing?
Ageing is not a defect, but rather a gift. It illustrates that you have stayed alive, acquired experience, relished life, shed tears, and developed over time. Every wrinkle on your face has a tale to share.
Take for instance actress Heather Graham, who, at 55, claims she is the happiest she has ever been, or Judith Viorst, a renowned author still writing, laughing, and living freely at 94.
Luckily, a fresh crop of social media influencers and beauty brands focus on celebrating rather than shaming people as they age. These new brands don’t promise to take years off your face; rather, they pledge to support you and your skin—no guilt, no pressure.
This movement of ‘pro-aging’ focuses on fostering confidence instead of corrections, embracing how you look when you look in the mirror—whatever that might be.
Social Media – The Solution We Never Knew Existed
Surprisingly, social media and its plethora of influencers isn’t just a pool of negativity. Some accounts take it upon themselves to showcase true unfiltered aging, and it is undeniably refreshing. Aging skin, wrinkles, gray hair, textured skin—the whole shebang.
By celebrating natural beauty and promoting openness about what we do and don’t do to our faces, we can all help foster real relatable content offline. This is beneficial for everyone, but especially younger people who need to understand that growing older is normal and not something to fear.
